Lindsey
John was fitting in quite well at the library. He'd made a fast friend with Charlie at the circulation desk and he had settled into his small office. Cubicle, really, since four of them were in one room. He was hardly there anyway. Just to use the electric kettle for a cup of tea on break.
He had begun to notice Lindsey. Every day he saw him he thought he should say hello. And some days he got closer to speaking to the man than others. He wanted to, but he began to think, to think and question and second guess himself and he always found a reason to turn away and go shelve a book or some such.
But today Lindsey took him by surprise. John came around the corner and the man was just there. Put on the spot, John didn't know what else to do but speak.
"He-hello," he said, a nervous smile twitching at the corners of his mouth. He met Lindsey's eyes and then found he had to look away. "Hello, Lindsey. Studying, then, I suppose?"
